California Braces for Weekend Fire Weather Amid Storms, Intense Heat

Wildfire conditions will be elevated through Sunday as thunderstorms roll through Northern California and the southern half of the state faces record-breaking temperatures.

The National Weather Service has issued red flag warnings for much of the state, indicating critical fire weather conditions. A combination of dry thunderstorms, gusty winds and extreme heat will create a heightened fire risk throughout the weekend.

In Northern California, thunderstorms are expected to bring lightning strikes, which can spark new fires. The storms will also produce gusty winds, which can fan the flames of existing fires. In the southern half of the state, record-breaking temperatures are expected, with some areas reaching up to 115 degrees Fahrenheit. These high temperatures will dry out vegetation and make it more susceptible to burning.

Here are some tips to stay safe during heightened fire weather conditions:

  • Be aware of the fire danger in your area and follow the instructions of local officials.
  • Have a plan for evacuation in case of a wildfire.
  • Clear brush and other flammable materials away from your home.
  • Be careful with campfires and other open flames.
  • Report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
